Why do some Self-Employed People Fail?

Being self-employed may seem to those who work for someone else like the ideal situation.  Having no boss to answer to, being able to set your own hours and having the flexibility to work from home can be quite enticing.  However, there is much more to it than that, and this unrealistic view of being self-employed is a big part of the reason many newly self-employed people fail.

If you are looking for an easy way to make money, without having to put in much effort, time or work, I suggest you try your luck at the lottery!  Being self-employed does not mean that you can sleep in, watch television and take vacations whenever you so desire!  In fact, being self-employed means working many more hours than you ever have before, eating, sleeping and breathing your business every moment of every day.

You are your own boss when you are self-employed but with that title comes serious responsibility.  You are in charge of creating an income, of finding customers, marketing, advertising, record keeping, taxes and everything that goes along with running a business.

People often fail when they become self-employed because they fail to realize just how much work and dedication is required.  This isn’t a part time endeavor!  Whether you are selling a product or a service you must provide excellent customer service to current customers and continually seek out ways to find new customers.  Without bringing in a constant flow of new customers, you have no income!

Another reason self-employed people fail is because they don’t educate themselves on the tax laws.  Many new businesses end up closing because they fail to pay their taxes on time and are hit with penalties and interest that end up causing the business to fail.  Obviously hiring a tax professional to assist you with your tax obligations, understanding self-employment tax responsibilities and  helping you determine if you have to pay quarterly or yearly.  Too many people think they only have to file taxes at the end of the year, but when you are self-employed that is not always true!

When you are deciding to go out on your own and become self-employed, do your research!  Know if your product or service is actually viable, if there is a demand in your local community first.  Check out the competition, what are they doing right, or wrong?  Get some legal advice and by all means consult with a tax professional!

You must be a very motivated, self-starter that is not afraid of hard work!  You must be able to get up every morning and be prepared to work hard.  Do not be fooled into thinking that being self-employed is easy!  It is rewarding, but only after you have done your research, preparation and put in the effort, time and energy needed to make it successful.

The self-employed that have failed say that they were not prepared, did not do enough research on their idea, product or service and did not realize just how much effort and time would be required.  Walk into it with your eyes open, your mind educated and your body ready to work if you want to be successful!
