Want a Job You Love?
Ever sit and think about what it would be like to have a job you loved? We have all met people who say they love what they do for a living, people who seem genuinely content, even happy at work. For some of us, this is only a fantasy; we simply couldn’t imagine being that happy with our jobs. So what is different about the people who love their jobs? How can you become one of them?
I have had the wonderful experience of talking to people from all walks of life, people doing physical labor jobs, office jobs, executive level jobs, retail jobs, you name it, and I have had the pleasure of talking to them. I am consistently amazed at how many truly love what they do. Some say that their current job really wasn’t/isn’t their dream job, but they are as happy as can be anyway.
Naturally while talking to all of these people I came across just as many that were miserable at their jobs. They hated going to work every day, dreaded the mere thought of waking up to another day of work at their places of employment. I also talked with people who were ambivalent, they knew they had to work, so they did, their job was just a job.
What was the difference between those that loved their jobs and those that were ambivalent or hated their jobs? One might expect the answer to be money. It is easy to assume those that made the most money were the happiest. Albeit, that answer would be wrong!
You might assume if not money, then it has to be that the people that have careers or jobs working with what they love personally were the happiest. People that loved animals, working as veterinarians for example or people who love children, doing daycare. But alas, you would be wrong again!
I talked to a man who worked at a gas station, he used to have a career in sales but the economic crisis ended that career. He had taken a severe pay cut, worked long hours for little pay, but loved his job! I talked to a high powered executive that was making more money than he had ever dreamed of and he hated his job. What was the difference between these two men? It is as simple as their outlook and attitudes.
This held true again and again. Those that you would expect to be happy and loving what they did were miserable and those you would expect to hate their jobs were amongst the happiest people I had ever met! It’s about enjoying the moments of your life. It’s about taking pride in what you do, no matter what “IT” is. Feeling lucky to have a job at all, taking pride in what you do regardless of how important it may seem to others makes all the difference in the world!
If you want to have a job you love, decide to love it! Make the choice to care about your job, make the choice to do your best, and start looking at your job as being the best job in the world for you at this moment. How you perceive your job defines how you feel about it as well! Want a job you love? Make the choice to love what you are doing today!
