Pets are great companions because they provide unconditional love, and loyalty in a way that human can not. They can offer love and companionship, and can also enjoy comfortable silences and keep secrets. That is why many are now treating their pets as a member of the family. According to research, pets can help lower blood pressure and decrease the chance of heart attack. However, pets are not for everyone because they come with additional responsibility that can also be stressful to its owners, which is why pet sitting is a perfect home-based business.

Owners are always looking for reliable pet-care services where they can entrust their pets with. Pet sitting is an up and coming business nowadays, as owners need extra help with their pets during the work week, vacations, or illness. Many are into this money making activity because of the increasing demand and the fun that it brings while getting paid. It can also involve the entire family as pet sitting can be done in the comfort of your own home.

There are a few things, however, that you should consider if you decide in starting a pet sitting business. You must love pets and have patience in dealing with them. Normally they are dog or cat pets, but you must also be ready to care for a pet you have never cared before. Make sure to take the responsibility when looking after your client’s pets. You must follow their instructions and ask questions if you are unsure of what to do. Your obligation may include walking, feeding, cleaning, boarding, trips to the vet, playing with them, and exercising. It is not easy to look after a pet that is why knowledge of the traits and habits of various household pets is necessary so you know how to care for them accordingly. Your customers love and have emotional bond with their pets so it is important that you understand your relationship with them. Convey love and concern to the pets and project professionalism and reliability.

Know how to charge and what to charge according to the services that you are offering. Most sitters rate $10 to $16 for one visit per day and $18 to $25 for two or more visits. You can search online for prices that other pet sitters charge. Consider competition in the neighborhood that maybe in the same business. Learn what they are offering and what they are not providing. Offer a competitive price or bundle your services and charge accordingly.  You may also take into consideration your play area for the pets. Clients would like it if you have a homey play area for their pets to enjoy.

Time management is necessary so you can accommodate several clients a day without shortchanging anyone. Of course, you have your own responsibilities at home so make sure that you organize your appointments well so you can pay full attention to what you are doing.  Be systematic and plan what you are going to do and be sure to adhere to it. Be confident that you can do the job right and do not forget to have fun.

Marketing your services to working couples is a great way to start because these professionals barely have time to attend to their pets. Print some flyers describing the types of services you are offering to let people know of your business. Place an ad in your local newspaper for effective and wider market but nothing beats the word of mouth as these are testimonials from happy and satisfied clients.
