Lost Your Job? Dealing with Change

Many of us are dealing with unemployment for the first time in our lives.  Those of us that are in our 30’s, 40’s 50’s and above grew up in a world where those that wanted to work could.  We grew up in a world where if you had a good work ethic, did your job well, you could count on being employed for many years, and even retire comfortably.  That world is only a memory now.  For many of us dealing with this change has been stressful and overwhelming.

The saying that the only constant in life is Change and taxes holds true!  We are experiencing some pretty major changes these days and we need to know how to deal with these changes.  As tough as it is to feel as if you have to start all over, a lot of what happens from here is dependent upon your willingness to change, to accept and to embrace a new tomorrow.

When we resist change we make it much more difficult to become a positive change. Losing a job and having to find a new career is not the worst thing that could ever happen, even though it may feel like it at first. Being unemployed can be a mere stepping stone to something much better entering your life. It is very tough to not only hear, but to accept that possibility when you first become unemployed. You need to grieve, much like the passing of a friend, you must grieve the finality of that career. Get angry, go through the sadness, and then the fear of the unknown future, and then finally you will come to acceptance and the desire to take action.

Allowing yourself to feel the loss, the anger and the fear can go a long way towards reaching the point where you can see this job loss as a positive. Many people have lost their job and decided to become self-employed only to realize that losing that job was the best thing that could have ever happened to them. Others have been forced to change career paths in mid life only to find that they were able to find another job doing something they actually love.

Look at this loss as a gain in your life. This job loss opens the door to possibilities you may have never even noticed otherwise.  Once you embrace the fact that you have the chance to find something better as a result of this job loss, your entire perspective changes. When we think positively, positive things happen.  Unfortunately, when we think negatively, and act like victims of the economy, we prevent opportunity from entering our lives.

Open your heart and your mind to the fact that change can be a great thing in your life. If you try to find the potential and the positives involved with a career change, only good things can happen.  Don’t make the mistake of thinking your life is out of control or that you are a victim.  The only person stopping you from reacting positively to this change is YOU.
