In this tough economy millions of people are finding themselves unemployed.  Jobs are being eliminated and salaries are being cut everywhere you look.  It can be a very stressful, overwhelming experience.  The opportunity to find a new career or job is limited at best.  Many middle aged people are finding that they need to literally begin searching for new careers.  Maybe it is time to stop looking for ‘jobs” and start thinking about being your own boss!  Being self-employed may be the answer that many need right now!

Even the younger generation; just getting out of college are finding it tough to find good paying jobs today.  This economic crisis has hit all walks of life and all age groups.  Gone are the days of job security.  Gone are the days of finding a job right out of college and growing with the company until you hit retirement age.  The security we used to take for granted simply no longer exists. 

It is a new day, a new era and we need to start taking a new approach to our financial future.  We need to look to ourselves for the security we desire.  Becoming self-employed is an option that many of us have never considered, while others have only fantasized about it.  Today making the choice to be self-employed can make the difference between allowing the economy to stress us out, and taking control of our lives and our futures. 

Take a serious look at your skills, talents and abilities.  Make a list of the things you do well.  Would anything on this list be something that someone else would pay for?  Perhaps you very skilled in marketing, or have a special talent for baking, whatever your skill may be, can you sell it?  If you didn’t have this skill, would you pay someone else that did? 

Once you come up with an idea, skill, service or even a product, it is time to do some research.  Find out if others in your local area are providing this service or product already.  Are they successful?  Is there room for competition?  Can you charge less and still make a profit?  Do as much research as you can to ensure that your service or product is viable in today’s market.

You can obtain a small business loan from the government easier than you think these days!  The government wants us to become self-employed to be creative and secure our own futures.  You can also obtain financing through investors, your local bank or credit union. 

Be realistic.  Being self-employed is hard work and requires a real commitment!  However the freedom and rewards are well worth the time and energy you will put in.  No more worries about being laid off, or downsized.  No more having to deal with a difficult boss or co-workers.  You can call the shots!  It takes time to build a solid business from the ground up, but you can do it if you have the determination, motivation and desire to succeed!
