Jobs, Stepping Down in order to Step Up

Did you lose your job, have your position eliminated or quit because you weren’t going where you wanted to go?  Being unemployed for any reason can be stressful and very scary to most people.  Sometimes when you are trying to start over, you find yourself having to take a job that pays way less, has less benefits and is lower on the ladder than you expected. That does not have to be a bad thing!

Having to change jobs and careers is much more common today than ever in the past.  People at all levels of the work force are finding themselves seeking employment in places they never thought they would look.  I know many former executives who have accepted jobs at an entry level just to get their foot in the door.  This has become the norm!

Walk into any retail store and odds are pretty good that a few of the people working there have extensive work experience in a different field.  This is a direct result of the economic crisis and staggering unemployment rates.

Sometimes we have to put away our ego and realize that we have to take a few steps backwards in order to go forward again.  This is especially true when it comes to jobs.  Many people have had to accept entry level positions just to make ends meet.  What some are quickly realizing is that thanks to their extensive work experience, they are able to advance much faster than imagined.

The economy will turn around, in face some experts say it has already started.  Open yourself up to the possibilities of looking for lower paying and lower level jobs right now so that when the economy does pick up you will be able to move up that ladder in your new field.

A friend of mine worked in offices her entire career.  After 15 years at one particular company her job was eliminated.  She spent the better part of a year looking for work in her particular field to no avail.  Finally out of sheer desperation she started applying at places she never would have considered in the past.  She ended up getting an entry level job at a company that she had no prior experience or knowledge.  Within four months the higher ups noticed her work ethic, ability to learn quickly and exceptional positive attitude while doing her job.  She was offered a position much closer to what she used to do, that paid even more than the salary she had a year ago.  This company only promoted from within, therefore she had to prove herself before being offered a career position.  Although she didn’t know this, she just decided to make the best of her situation and be grateful for even having a job.  She went in everyday with the mindset that she would do her very best and be happy while doing it.  It paid off in ways she could have never expected!

Put away your ego, start looking for jobs in places you never would have looked before! Keep a positive outlook and you too will be amazed at the opportunities that come your way!
