Is Your Company Downsizing? How to Save Your Job!
Everyone you talk to is worried about the economy and the possibility of losing their job, if they haven’t already. Companies are downsizing, eliminating jobs, ending careers all over the world. There are things you can do to help prevent yourself from becoming one of the unemployed.
The simple fact that we know the economy is tough and that our employers have to tighten their belts should be enough to cause action! If you have always performed your job at an acceptable level, it’s time to move it up a notch or two! It is time to pull out all the stops and make yourself one of the most valuable assets in your company. Your employer needs to be able to SEE that you are worth keeping around!
Some of the things you can do include start learning jobs that people are doing around you. Become an expert on the company software. Start volunteering for various committees or to help out with other people’s projects. Start finding ways to make the job you do more efficient, take on a bigger work load, make it obvious to anyone who looks that you are the hardest worker in the place!
People used to think that when companies started thinking about cutting jobs, it was best to keep a low profile, out of sight out of mind kind of thinking. That couldn’t be farther from the truth these days. If you make yourself invisible to the higher ups, if they don’t even know your name, you will be one of the first to go. Why keep someone that no one knows much about? You want to do just the opposite. You want people talking about you! You want the higher ups to not only know your name, but know that you adapt easily to change and are capable of doing any job that needs done.
The more valuable you become to your employer, the tougher it will be to let you go! You need to learn as much about the company as you can. Show that you can work well in any department. By doing this, even if the department you are currently in does end up getting eliminated, you have demonstrated your ability to be moved into a department that isn’t being eliminated. The more areas of the company that you would be qualified to work the safer your employment there becomes.
We all know our jobs could be eliminated at any time, it only makes sense that we do all we can to ensure our own security. Broaden your horizons, learn other positions in the company, prove that you can do other jobs and let it be known that you are one of the best workers employed at the company. Naturally there are never any guarantees, but you certainly will lessen the odds of losing your job if you prove your flexibility and value to the company.
Times are tough, it really is up to each of us as individuals to do all we can to justify our positions. Become a valued asset and save your job!
