Is Money Really the Root of all Evil?

chair taller than everyone

Wealthy people say more money means more problems.  Poor people say having no money means more problems.  Those in debt say if the credit companies would quit sending me credit cards I wouldn’t need more money.  It sure appears that money is evil whether you have it, need it or just want it.

If we really think about money, isn’t it intended to make our lives less complicated?  Although most may disagree, money is supposed to just be a means to pay for products and services that are required to live.  It is not inherently evil it is not inherently good; it just is.  It is supposed to be a tool, one of many that we use to pursue happiness.  Money does not guarantee happiness, nor does it guarantee grief, its only guarantee is that others will accept it as an exchange for goods or services.

Somewhere we as individuals chose to give money both blame and credit for that which it doesn’t deserve.  We blame money when we have spent too much and are now without.  We blame money when the bills come in and we cannot pay them.  We give credit to money when we open our mail and see a bright shiny new credit card just beckoning us to get that new gadget or trinket.  It is money’s fault that we are in debt up to our eyeballs and can’t see a way out.  If it wasn’t for that money we wouldn’t be in this position.  If it wasn’t for the lack of money we could be happy.  Sound familiar?

Being in debt can cause us to blame everything from money to credit card companies to the government for allowing them to grant us credit.  And how dare they charge us interest and finance charges on balances that we are not able to pay to begin with?!  Money is evil, those that give it are evil, and those that take it are evil.  Hmm, so where do we as individuals come in to the equation?

We make the choices to spend money, to save money, and to accept credit with a smile.  We make the choices to get into debt.  When we decide we just must have the latest model car or the newest cell phone or the biggest house on the block even when we know we can’t afford it. Sure the credit companies allow us these options, but isn’t that part of why we love America?  We are allowed to make our own choices even if that which we choose is wrong or bad for us.

No, money is not the root of all evil.  In fact money isn’t evil at all.  Our need for instant gratification regardless of the consequences can certainly be called evil.  But again it is our choices that allow that evil into our lives.  Perhaps if we put our focus back on helping our neighbor instead of trying to have more than they do, society as a whole would change!
