  1. Ask yourself what is it that you like to focus on. Choose whether you  will specialize in whole grain breads, pies with fruits of the season and specialty cakes for occasions like weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. Your decision will be based upon your expertise and the equipment available to you.
  2. Try to look for caterers, bakers, chefs, and other home-based food businesses in your area and inquire about licensing. If no one can help you with it, you can call your county or state licensing offices and ask for guidelines for a home baking business. You may have an initial visit from a health inspector and suggest some changes in order to comply with their regulations. Now that the initial step taken cared of, you can expect frequent visits from the health inspectors to make sure you didn’t go back to your original set up. Of course, some home-based business occasionally make specialty cakes for individuals and operate without the need for health inspections.  If you are planning to expand commercially to make  your business more profitable, you should be fully licensed to avoid any setbacks and penalties.
  3. Decide about the business name. You cannot register your business without a business name.
  4. Invite friends over for tea and serve them your baked goodies then tell them that you want to start a home-based baking business. Bring sample baked goods to your target markets. These are the types of market that will ensure a steady order output and high volume profits.
  5. Do have a well-appointed kitchen. After all this business depends on the equipment you have. Keep a fire extinguisher  handy.
  6. Keep your kitchen well stocked. Replenish perishables regularly, preferably through a food cooperative or a wholesale baking suppliers and take advantage of discounts when buying in bulk.
  7. Make a record of the transactions. Make an inventory. A good way to keep track of these transactions is to buy an accounting software.  This process includes keeping accurate records of  cost of supplies, fees for advertising, and over-all operating expenses that you may be able to deduct as tax exemption to minimize your tax liability. Adequate records is imperative at the time such expenses are incurred because you may not  be able to make these claims at a later time.

Expect some odd hours of work and a lot of energy for this field.  People must have occasions and people got to eat. Some find home-based baking business  to be very lucrative, so if you have an eye for details and an aim to please, this business will give you success.
