For many of us the thought of retirement never even occurs to us. Maybe you have decades before you have to worry about that. For others the thought of retiring is a constant in our minds as we get closer and closer to our golden years. Regardless of which category you fall into, preparing for the future must start today! You must invest in your own future. If you don’t, who will?

We can no longer count on Social Security to support us in our retirement years. Most of us that are lucky enough to have jobs, either aren’t taking advantage of company sponsored 401K programs, or are working for companies that do not offer any type of retirement plans. The terrifying reality is that the majority of us will literally have to work till the day that we die just to get by, if we don’t start investing today!

The myth that most of us choose to believe is that our expenses will be less when we get older and are ready to retire. In the past people typically had their homes paid off before retirement age, in today’s world that just isn’t happening! People are having to get second and even third mortgages in order to pay for children’s education, major expenses, to make up for income loss due to unemployment and many other reasons. Most of us will NOT have our homes paid for by the time we are ready to retire.

Additionally, the myth says that we will have lower expenses due to not having to commute to work each day, not having to worry about career wardrobe expenses and we will spend less on children in our advanced years. Come on, really? We will spend just as much on driving as we will want to be visiting family and friends and traveling. We will still need clothing, and if you have children, can you ever see a day that you won’t be helping them where ever possible? This myth is garbage and we should know that!

Consider also the rate of inflation obviously things are going to cost much more when we reach retirement age than they do today. We will need enough money to support ourselves regardless of our ages!

We need to stop believing the myths, we need to stop thinking that retirement is so far away, and we need to start investing in our futures! Even if you don’t have a lot of extra money lying around to invest, every single dime you can invest will help! A little bit of money invested often can add up to a very comfortable retirement. We all want to enjoy our golden years, but at the rate we are going, our golden years will be spent struggling and working!

We simply must invest in our own financial security for the future. No one else is going to do it for us. The time is today, regardless of your current age, start investing every extra dime in order to make sure you actually do get to enjoy your golden years!
